Taj Hotel Coming to Weligama: Indian Hospitality Giant Signs Deal for Beachfront Resort

 By WeligamaLife.com Staff

Weligama’s transformation from a quiet fishing village to a serious player on the international tourism map has just taken a major step forward. The Indian Hotels Company Limited, better known as IHCL and the parent company of the legendary Taj brand, has announced that it will build a large luxury resort in this southern coastal town.

The news, shared with stock exchanges and media on April 14, 2025, confirms what many local business owners had suspected for months: Weligama is no longer just a surf spot for backpackers. It is becoming a destination for global luxury travel.

A Large Project by Local Standards

The proposed Taj Weligama is not a small boutique hotel. According to the announcement, the greenfield project—meaning it will be built from the ground up on undeveloped land—will feature two hundred and twenty rooms in total. Among these, eighty will be luxury apartments, likely aimed at long-term residents or high-end investors.

The resort will sit directly on the beachfront, offering sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. For a town accustomed to small guesthouses and mid-range hotels, this represents a significant leap in scale and ambition.

Who Is Behind the Deal?

The signing brings together two partners. On one side is IHCL, India’s largest hospitality company by market value. The Taj brand, founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1903 with the opening of the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, is known worldwide as a symbol of Indian hospitality. Recent rankings from Brand Finance named Taj the World’s Strongest Hotel Brand for 2025.

On the other side is the Beryll Group, a real estate and infrastructure developer established in 2004. The group has worked on projects across India in sectors including healthcare, commercial buildings, heritage sites, and hotels. According to company materials, Beryll focuses on design-led developments meant to last for decades.

Why Weligama?

Speaking about the decision, IHCL’s Managing Director and CEO, Puneet Chhatwal, pointed to several factors. He described Weligama as a place that is quickly becoming one of Sri Lanka’s most important coastal destinations. The rise of surfing tourism, a growing interest in wellness travel, and the appeal of nature-based experiences have all played a role.

Mr. Chhatwal also noted that tourism in Sri Lanka is gaining steady momentum after several difficult years. For IHCL, this project strengthens the Taj brand’s presence in the region. The company already operates hotels in Colombo and other parts of the island.

Vishal Agarwal, a director at Beryll Group, said that Weligama has enduring global appeal. He explained that partnering with IHCL allows the group to build a coastal resort that fits the natural character of the area while still meeting international luxury standards. He described the project as a sign of his company’s long-term commitment to Sri Lanka.

What Guests Can Expect

Once completed, the Taj Weligama will offer a long list of facilities. Guests will find multiple places to eat, including an all-day dining restaurant, two specialty restaurants, a beach bar and grill, a separate bar and lounge, and a deli.

For relaxation, the resort will include Taj’s signature J Wellness Circle, a spa brand that focuses on holistic treatments. There will also be a swimming pool, a modern gym, a kids’ play room, and an entertainment zone.

For business events or weddings, the hotel plans to offer a banquet hall and convention space covering more than nine thousand square feet. In addition, there will be smaller meeting rooms and exclusive outdoor lawns.

A Changing Town

Weligama has long been known for its crescent-shaped bay and gentle waves, which make it an ideal spot for beginner surfers. In recent years, the town has also attracted visitors interested in yoga, Ayurveda, and quiet beach life. But most of the accommodation has been small-scale, family-run, or mid-range.

The arrival of a Taj resort signals a new chapter. It suggests that international investors see Weligama as a place that can support high-end tourism, with guests willing to pay for luxury rooms, fine dining, and premium services.

For local residents, the reaction has been mixed. Some welcome the investment, hoping it will create jobs and raise the profile of the area. Others worry about rising land prices, increased competition for small businesses, and the risk that Weligama might lose some of its laid-back character.

What Happens Next?

The project is still in the signing phase. No opening date has been announced. Greenfield hotel projects of this size typically take several years to complete, from obtaining permits to construction and final furnishing.

However, the announcement alone is a signal. Weligama has caught the attention of one of Asia’s most respected hotel chains. For travelers who have loved this town for its simplicity and charm, the coming years will reveal whether luxury and authenticity can coexist on the same sandy shore.
